Mattress Cleaning

Have You Ever Had Your Mattress Cleaned?

If the answer is 'no' - you are not alone. The UK is a number of years behind countries like Germany and the USA where regular mattress cleaning is regarded as an absolute must! As a nation we are fanatical about cleaning and hygiene and wash just about everything we come into contact with including our clothes, sheets, carpets, windows and cars. Our mattress however, which we sleep on, night after night, year after year, is unfortunately very often neglected!

Why Clean It?

Baby with teddybearIt could be for purely hygiene reasons, the fabric naturally attracts body oils & fluids, sweat, skin flakes, makeup, household dust etc which are rapidly transferred and bond to the mattress surface.  If left, bacteria form, causing odours and a potential health hazard.
Maybe the mattress has been in storage and has developed a musty odour. A child, elderly person or pet could have had an 'accident' on it.

Few people realise the mattress and surrounding bedroom carpet area is a perfect breeding ground for tens of millions of microscopic dust mites, all feeding off the dead flakes of skin we shed every night. Their droppings trigger a host of allergic reactions including:

  • Asthma
  • Excema
  • Sneezing
  • Rhinitis
  • Itchy red eyes
  • Hay fever
  • Sinus problems and headaches
  • Poor quality of sleep

The problem

Dust MiteDust mites are microscopic and live indoors in warm, moist places like pillows, carpets and mattresses. These creatures are invisible to the unaided eye. Their translucent bodies further hinder their visibility. Dust mites have no eyes or antennae, just eight legs and a mouth-like appendage.

A brand new mattress is infected within 6 months of daily use. A typical mattress may have up to ten million mites actively living in it. A pillow of only two years old can compose of up to 10% dust mite faeces and carcasses. This is revolting. Even children’s soft toys become infected. Children and babies exposed to dust and mites can develop complications which potentially could last for a lifetime.

Attempting to clean with a standard domestic vacuum cleaner is not recommended as the microscopic mites and their faeces tend to travel straight through the machine due to inadequate filtration.  This further contaminates the whole surrounding area.

DeepSan 3 stage deep cleaning solution

Medical opinion suggests your household mattresses and bedroom carpets should be deep cleaned and treated at least once a year.  More frequently for nursing and commercial usage.  Always use a good quality micromesh mattress cover.  This should be frequently machine washed on a hot setting.
